Support Local Ecosystems This Spring with Native Plants

The Summit County Surface Water Management District (SWMD) continues its “On the Road to Clean Water” series in 2026, offering monthly educational topics designed to help residents better understand and protect our local water resources.

This month’s focus is on native plants, an easy and impactful way homeowners can support both the environment and their own landscapes. Native plants are naturally adapted to our region’s soil conditions, rainfall, and sunlight, meaning they require fewer resources like water, fertilizer, and maintenance to thrive.

In addition to being low-maintenance, native plants play a vital role in supporting local wildlife. Hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other important pollinators are naturally drawn to these plants, helping to strengthen the health and diversity of our ecosystem.

Native plants also provide significant environmental benefits below the surface. Their deep root systems help absorb large amounts of stormwater, reducing runoff and helping to protect nearby streams, rivers, and lakes from pollution.

Whether you’re planning a spring landscaping project or simply looking for ways to make your yard more environmentally friendly, incorporating native plants is a simple step that can make a lasting difference.

Be sure to check back each month as SWMD continues to share helpful tips and topics aimed at protecting our environment and improving water quality across the region.
