NORTHFIELD CENTER TOWNSHIP E- NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the newest way Northfield Center Township will be communicating and getting updates to our residents. The Northfield Center Township E-Newsletter will be a quarterly publication that highlights all the important updates and great things going on in the Township. The E-Newsletter will cover topics such as Administration, Zoning, Safety and Service Department updates. We hope you enjoy this and please share this with friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up here for not only this newsletter but all notifications sent out by the Township. Each quarter the township will publish this newsletter by email, post to social media and will save it on Northfield Center Township website.

Administration

It has been about 10 months since we moved into our new 10,000 Square Foot facility at 8484 Olde 8 Road. The building (shown above in the newsletter) is an all encompassing facility, 80% for the fire department, and 20% for administration offices including a meeting room. All township staff are now working from this location and we could not be happier how things have gone. As for our old fire station, the board of trustees has decided to sell that property. There has been interest from potential buyers, however no final decisions have been made.

The Old Townhall Building on Brandywine is closed at this time. Our Townhall Committee, made up of wonderful residents, did make a recommendation to the board around repurposing the building and creating a township community space. This is a great idea however the building itself has many challenges including, asbestos, foundational, heating & air and a broken elevator. For now the township will keep the Old Townhall closed and not allow any groups to rent the space given those challenges. More to come, and as we work on updates we will pass them along.

Next month there will be a total solar eclipse passing North America. Much of northeast Ohio is in the path of the eclipse and the Township is working with City of Macedonia Fire Department along with Summit County Sherriff Office. We expect increased traffic and potential cell service overloads so please be prepared. Northfield Center Township Trustees would encourage residents to stay home for the eclipse if possible. Also a reminder that schools are closed that day.

Lastly, don’t forget there is a Primary Election Day on Tuesday March 19th. Please visit the Summit County Board of Elections to find your polling location. Northfield Center Township Residents have two issues on the ballot- one for Policing and one for the Nordonia City Schools. Please don’t forget to vote!

Safety

The new Fire Station has been open for almost 10 months and Northfield Center Township residents have already seen great results. Decreased response times are just one of those and our first responders now have the facility and equipment needed. Thanks to a $250K grant from the state of Ohio lead by Senator Bill Roemer and Kristina Roegner, we were able to buy turnout gear, a gear extractor and many other supplies that help not only our residents but the Nordonia community. As a reminder, the Township contracts Fire protection with the City of Macedonia and we enjoy a great partnership with them.

There will be a police levy on the March 19th ballot which is asking for additional funds to cover increased costs. Summit County Sheriff Office covers our township and they have done so for the last 50 years. Due to rising insurance and other costs, the township did see an almost 20% increase. Northfield Center Township has not asked residents for a police levy increase in over 10 years. Please read the ballot language and please do not forget to vote.

Service

Spring is always a busy time for our service department. The planning process has begun on which roads need paving based on an evaluation completed in 2022 by PMG Group. Additionally, this summer we will be working on a total road replacement of Bayberry funded by a $400,000 grant!  Lastly, Walters Road will be resurfaced and that project is a joint effort between the Township and the City of Macedonia. We will keep residents informed of progress on these projects as we get into the summer.

Zoning

The Zoning Board continues to work hard to make recommendations to the Board of Trustees, ensuring our zoning code is as strong as possible which protects property values. The Board of Trustees is working to digitize old zoning records to make retrieval easier and document retention efficient. We are also working to digitize zoning applications making it easier than ever for residents to apply for permits that they need. After the retirement of Don Saunders in October of last year, Tim Black was appointed Interim Zoning Inspector as part of his overall duties as Director of Services.

Should any resident have a concern about if they need a zoning permit or see potential zoning violations please call the office or send our zoning department an email at [email protected]

Trustees Corner
To ensure resident involvement, the Board of Trustees created several resident committees; Communications, Safety, Parks & Rec, Old Townhall and Storm Water. These are great ways to get involved and they help the board identify issues and come up with solutions. The Park Committee is a perfect example. They are responsible for park planning, landscape ideas, and holding special township events like “Movie in the Park” in the fall. The committee does a lot of the planning and the board helps to execute on that which benefits the township. Thank you to our committees for all that you do. If you or someone you know may want to be apart of our committees we are looking for folks to join the Communications and Parks committee. Please send our township secretary an email or call the office if interested.
