As summer comes to an end, many residents may be getting ready to close their pools for the season. When it is time to drain your pool, it is important to do so properly to help protect our local streams, rivers, and lakes.
As part of its “On the Road to Clean Water” educational series, the Summit Soil & Water Conservation District is highlighting Proper Pool Drainage for the month of September.
Pool water can contain chlorine, salt, and other chemicals that can be harmful to our waterways and aquatic life if they are released improperly. Storm drains can carry water directly to local streams and lakes, so pool water should never be discharged into the street or storm drains.
There are several steps residents can take to safely drain their pools while reducing the risk of flooding or runoff. Please refer to the graphic above for guidance on properly preparing and draining your pool.
