Please Remember: Do Not Eat Wild Mushrooms

Summit County Public Health (SCPH) reminds residents to avoid eating wild mushrooms and to keep children and pets away from them.

As damp weather continues, wild mushrooms may begin appearing in yards, gardens, and landscapes throughout Summit County. While many mushrooms may look harmless, some varieties found in Ohio are highly poisonous and can cause serious illness or even be deadly if eaten.

If You Find Wild Mushrooms in Your Yard

  • Do not consume wild mushrooms. Some varieties can be poisonous or deadly.
  • Carefully removing and disposing of mushrooms may help prevent them from spreading.
  • Remove mushrooms from the ground as soon as you notice the cap.
  • Place the mushroom in a plastic bag, tie the bag tightly, and dispose of it in your household trash.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling mushrooms.

If you or someone in your household ingests a wild mushroom and begins feeling sick, seek medical attention immediately.
