Which projects require permits? Most outside work including fences, decks, pools, driveways, garages, patios, pergolas, gazebos, accessory buildings, portable storage units, garages, and additions to homes and garages requires a permit. Many projects also require a county permit after obtaining the township's permit. It is always a good idea to check with the township if you are unsure if you need a permit.

How tall can a fence be?
A fence can be up to 6 feet high in the backyard or up to 3 1/2 feet high in the front yard.

Can the fence be on the property line or is there a setback requirement?
A fence can be installed on the property line, there is no setback requirement.

How large can an accessory building be? An accessory building can be up to 450 sq. feet for lots of 1 acre or less; lots of over an acre allow for more based on the size of the lot.

Is there a setback requirement for accessory buildings?
An accessory building must be at least 10 feet from the side and rear property lines, and at least 15 feet away from the main structure (house).

How big can a garage be?
A garage, either attached or detached, can be up to 960 square feet.

Is there a setback requirement for garages?
A garage must be at least 10 feet from the side and rear property lines.

Do I need a permit for a garage sale?
You do not need a permit for a garage sale, but you should contact the township office with the date of sale, address, and the property owner’s name.

Do I need a fence around my pool?
Yes; requirements differ depending on the type of pool. Please refer to our Zoning Resolution for pool fencing requirements and any other information needed.
