The Summit County Surface Water Management District (SWMD) has created its “On the Road to Clean Water” graphics for each month of 2026, featuring a different educational topic to help residents better understand and protect local water resources.
This month’s topic highlights rain gardens, an easy and effective way for homeowners to make a positive environmental impact right from their own property. As stormwater runoff remains an ongoing concern in our region, small changes in how we manage water at home can contribute to healthier streams, rivers, and lakes throughout the community.
Residents interested in sustainable practices are encouraged to explore solutions like rain gardens, which can be incorporated into many types of landscapes. Whether you’re planning a spring yard project or simply looking for ways to be more environmentally conscious, this is a great opportunity to get started.
For those looking to take the next step, Northfield Center residents are invited to participate in an upcoming Rain Barrel Workshop on May 13. This hands-on event will teach participants how rain barrels work, their environmental benefits, and how they help reduce stormwater runoff, while also giving attendees the opportunity to build and take home their own barrel. In addition to conserving water and potentially lowering outdoor water costs, residents may also be eligible for reimbursement through the Stormwater Solutions Residential Grant Program funded by SWMD. Pre- registration is required. Click here to view/ download the flyer!
Be sure to check back each month as SWMD continues to share helpful tips and topics aimed at protecting our environment and improving water quality across the region.
