Concerned About a Neighbor’s Health or Safety?

From time to time, residents may become aware of a neighbor who appears to be struggling with health, safety, or living-condition concerns. Northfield Center Township wants to ensure the community knows the proper steps to take so help can be provided quickly and appropriately.

Immediate Concerns

For non-emergencies or concerns, contact the Summit County Sheriff’s Office first. They are equipped to conduct wellness checks and respond to urgent situations. If you believe someone is in immediate danger, disoriented, unable to care for themselves, or facing an emergency situation, please call 911.

Concerns About Abuse, Neglect, or Exploitation – Contact Adult Protective Services (APS)

For concerns that involve possible abuse, neglect (by self or others), or exploitation of an elderly or sick resident you can also contact the Adult Protective Services (APS) part of the Summit County Department of Job & Family Services. 

How to Make a Report to APS: Anyone who suspects an adult may need protective services can make a referral by calling (330) 643-7217. Please provide any identifying information you have, such as:

  • Adult’s name; Age (if known);
  • Address
  • Nature and extent of the suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation
  • Why you believe the adult may be at risk

Reports may be made by any concerned individual, and anonymous reports are accepted.

Common Indicators/signs of Abuse or Neglect:
  • Multiple or severe bruises, burns, wounds, or broken bones
  • Injuries at different stages of healing
  • Signs of being restrained or locked in
  • Self-endangering behavior
  • Suicidal behavior
  • Confusion or wandering
  • Refusal of medical treatment
  • Homelessness
  • Elder’s report of abuse
Possible Signs of Neglect (Self-Neglect or by Another Person)
  • Dirt, fleas, lice, or poor personal hygiene
  • Bedsores or ulcerated sores
  • Malnourishment
  • Medications not being taken
  • Strong urine or fecal odor
  • Untreated medical conditions
